What is coaching?

When I had my first coaching session I thought to myself—this can’t be right?! ...my coach isn’t telling me what to do! They weren’t sharing their knowledge, they weren’t feeding me with wisdom… I needed more information! But I had it all backwards. It wasn't about being handed the answer to my questions. The coach began to unpack what coaching was and wasn’t. It’s not mentoring, or teaching, or even counselling. It was something else.

Thomas Crane begins to describe coaching “the art of assisting people enhance their effectiveness, in a way they feel helped.”

I like how he says “their effectiveness” – coaching is about your effectiveness: It’s helping you be better at being you.

He goes on to say that "touching peoples spirits and rekindling what deeply matters to them is what the heart of coaching is all about."

I’ve experienced that rekindling first hand, long before any talk of coaching:

I recall having a phone conversation to explore the idea of doing some post-graduate study. It was an incredible phone call but I hardly remember anything that was said—what I will always remember is how I felt after I hung up the phone. I was buzzing! Our conversation had just pushed so many buttons. It wasn’t so much the information I gained on the call, but the discussion had been so meaningful and motivating. The point I want to make is this—the buttons had to be there for my caller to press! It wasn’t inspiring because of who I was talking to, or really what I learned. It was the fact that the conversation connected with me, it touched something in my spirit and lit-up values and passions that I already carried.

A great conversation made me come alive.

Coaching is a deliberate conversation to help you be better at you.

Coaching recognises that you are the one who holds the answers to the questions you carry.

Coaching recognises that you are the one who holds the answers to the questions you carry. Or at the very least, the means to discover those answers.

The things that make you come alive are a part of who you are and who you’re designed to be. Your potential is huge. That phone-call tapped into passions in me which lead to a journey of learning which was massively meaningful and formative in my life... and still continues to shape my journey into my fifties.

Digging into those things that deeply matter makes me come alive. What matters to you? What makes you come alive?

Coaching isn’t also inspiring, shining light on your passions and dreams. It’s also practical. It just might be the right question at the right time, turning over a rock to find just what you’ve been looking for to take that next step.

A great conversation can get you moving.

Gary Collins defines coaching as “the art and practice of enabling individuals and groups to move from where they are to where they want to be”

The art and practice takes place through purposeful, intentional conversation. To explore what matters to you. To get you to where you want to be. To help you, be you.

So, in practical terms, what does coaching look like?

It looks like whatever one on one communication needs to be for you. They could be video calls, phone calls, or just sitting together in a room. Whatever it looks like, it’s a deliberate thing: we’ve booked a time and made the effort to sit down and get our conversation working for you. Hence the name!

Typically coaching would be over a few sessions, but that’s up to you, whatever it takes to reach the goal you are seeking. You could book as few or as many as you like. If you’re curious, the best thing is to simply sign up for a free session, and see how we go.

You can get in touch here.

So thanks for taking an interest.

I’m Kent Langdon, how can we get conversation working for you?
